Spartak Moscow vs. Fenerbahce
Spartak Moscow began their 2012/13 campaign in good style and secured 12 points from 5 games. They have a solid team with a decent manager. They prefer an attacking style of play this year evidenced by the fact that all 5 league matches to date have exceeded 2.5 goals per match.
In their 5 matches they scored 10 and conceded 8 goals. So what can we say about Spartak…….They have a great attack and a porous defense.
Their opponent Fenerbahce began their season poorly. They lost in the Supercup 3-2 and in the Turkish League they are 1-1 scoring 7 and conceding 5 goals in two matches. They have the attackers that can take advantage of an unstable Spartak defense; but, defensively Fenerbahce have some problems of their own giving up 5 goals in 3 matches.
I fully expect Spartak Moscow to win today but I clearly expect there to be more than 2.5 goals scored and I like this option just a little more. They will be playing on artificial turf (not sure if anyone cares) but it appears that straight-ahead sprint speed is similar between field turf and natural grass, but change-of-direction speed may be significantly faster on field turf. So advantage Strikers and advantage Spartak because Fenerbahce has had a very tight schedule leading up to this match and may lack fitness in the last 30 minutes of the match where artificial turf begins to heat up your boots/feet and cause cramps in weak legs.
My conclusion is a good performance by Spartak, a weak one by Fenerbachce down the stretch (but they should get a goal in the first 60 min. on a suspect Spartak defense) and a home field win by Spartak Moscow.
